Meet Angela

Because Mapleton deserves leadership that listens, leads with heart, and puts people before politics.

I was born in upstate New York, and moved to a small town in Wisconsin for high school. At 17, I came to Utah to attend BYU, where I graduated with a BA in Philosophy. After my husband Rick and I got married, we bought our first home near the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon, and–except for a 2 year stint living in Ireland-we lived there for 22 years. Eight years ago, we found the perfect spot with trees, a quiet street and a little more space, and we moved to Mapleton.

Service is a core value that was instilled by watching my grandparents and parents serve their communities as census takers, volunteer firefighters, members of the town library board and foster parents. Through 33 years of raising a family, that legacy of service has continued. I have focused on community involvement related to my kids and families in general by serving in my church, schools and other community organizations. Lately, I’ve managed the Utah County water polo team’s fundraiser, where we have sold literally tons of fresh oranges each year and sometimes subbed for programs the United Way offers like Meals on Wheels and Sub For Santa. Over the years, my time has been spent as PTA treasurer, PTO president, and helping to organize Nebo’s Bright Ideas events. I have volunteered at the World Congress of Families, and written letters to state and local leaders as a means of staying engaged.

In the World

My volunteering has given me the opportunity to serve on various nonprofit boards. With one, I went to the UN’s Commission on the Status of Women in 2017 and 2018, where I saw firsthand how policy decisions made by groups from around the world can trickle down to local groups and affect policies closer to home. It takes vigilance, active participation, and foresight to develop and maintain the way of life we want our communities and families to have.

In the Community

Over the last ten years, I have collaborated and built another nonprofit organization that offers weekly classes to 75 teens from across Utah County. As a leader on the board of directors, I authored the initial bylaws and worked to create guiding principles that have made us a successful and thriving organization that stays aligned with a vision of the future and operates according to a mission that will enable us to achieve that.

In Mapleton

We love our neighbors, our quiet street, our old Carnesecca cherry trees, our proximity to the bike trail and even the wind from the canyon at night. We have been amazed by the way neighbors take care of each other, and have seen that first hand, including when the community came together to fill and place sand bags to protect our neighbors after the Ether Hollow Fire.

My little boys love the freedom of riding their bikes to the library, playing on city basketball and baseball teams, and being close to Hobble Creek and Maple Canyons where they can sled, play, hike and enjoy the outdoors. My older boys find solace in the quiet freedom of being in a small town, and keep moving back home to our little bedroom community where they appreciate a more rural feeling and getting back to their roots. Our family loves Mapleton.

My desire to serve the community pushes me to expand my understanding of what is happening around me. I love being involved and working to find the best ways to contribute my time, efforts, skills and perspectives. Wanting to contribute is the quality that guides my decision to become a candidate for Mapleton City Council. I would be honored to serve you and would appreciate your support.
